Okay, let’s talk about the “other” side of a ski vacation.
I’m talking about the day the wind is blowing so hard it feels like you’re being sandblasted by ice. Or maybe it’s that “bluebird” day, but your legs have officially turned to Jell-O and are staging a full-on mutiny. Or maybe… you just don’t ski!
A “down day” in the mountains can feel like a trap. You’re in one of the most expensive places on earth, and you’re not doing the main expensive thing. So what now?
As a local who loves being warm (and also loves saving money), I’m here to tell you that an indoor day doesn’t have to be boring or break your budget. Here’s your guide to staying warm on a dime.
The 100% FREE Activities Indoors
You heard me. Free. As in, $0.00. Put your wallet away.
Go Museum Hopping in Breckenridge
I know, “museums” sounds like a high-school field trip, but stick with me. Breckenridge has some fascinating history, and the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance runs several small, amazing museums that are completely free (though a $5 suggested donation is always nice!).
- Breckenridge Welcome Center: This is your first stop. It’s part museum, part info center, and it’s built around an original 19th-century log cabin they found inside the walls of the old building. It’s open 7 days a week and is the perfect place to get your bearings.
- Barney Ford Museum: This beautiful Victorian home tells the story of Barney Ford, an escaped slave who became a civil rights leader and one of Breckenridge’s most prominent businessmen. It’s an incredible, powerful story.
- Edwin Carter Museum: A must-see for animal lovers. This is a replica of the original 1870s museum from a local naturalist who was (ironically) a hunter-turned-conservationist.
Time Travel at the Frisco Historic Park & Museum
This is one of my favorite places to take visitors. Right on Frisco’s Main Street, this free park and museum is an open-air collection of real, historic buildings. You can walk through an old schoolhouse, peek into the town’s original jail (it’s tiny), and just get a feel for how rugged life was back in the day. It’s open Tuesday-Sunday and is the perfect way to kill an hour or two.
This is also a great excuse to venture over to Frisco, which has a lot to offer! After exploring the historic cabins you can walk along Main Street and even make it a full morning or afternoon adventure by adding in a coffee shop or wine/whiskey bar!
Become a Library Lounger
Don’t laugh! The Summit County Libraries (all three branches in Breck, Frisco, and Silverthorne) are modern, gorgeous, and the ultimate budget hack. They have:
- Comfy chairs and cozy fireplaces with community puzzles to work on (swoon!).
- Free, high-speed Wi-Fi with “study rooms” you can reserve for up to three hours (very useful if you have to work remotely during your time here).
- A calendar full of free events like knitting clubs, tech help, and book talks.
- A quiet place to just sit, read a book, and enjoy the mountain views through a window.
- Great kid-friendly play areas with rotating toys, story times, and scavenger hunts.
And let’s break down the library options in Summit County because we do have THREE amazing libraries. Here are a few of my favorite things about each library branch:
- South Branch Library (Breckenridge): This library building is a restored historic building that is beautiful. The library is two levels and there is also The Understory (hobby/art/community space) and the Eclipse Theater in the same building.
- Main Branch Library (Frisco): This library is more of a “standard” library but it is large and has an area with gorgeous views.
- North Branch Library (Silverthorne): This is the most updated library in the county and on a snowy day the sitting area near the fireplace makes you feel like you’re in a snow globe!
The Affordable Upgrades
Okay, so you’re willing to spend a little money to be entertained. These are your best bets.
Hit the Rec Center (Like a Local)
This is hands-down the best value for an active, indoor day. Both the Breckenridge Rec Center and the Silverthorne Rec Center are massive, world-class facilities.
- The Breckenridge Rec Center: This 88,000 sq. ft. beast has a huge aquatic center with two pools, a two-story slide, a lazy river, and a rope swing. That’s on top of a climbing wall, indoor track, and full gym. During the weekends they inflate bounce houses in half of their gym (this is an additional cost but if you have kids you know this is worth the $5 they charge!)
- The Silverthorne Rec Center: Just as awesome, with multiple pools, slides, and a huge gym. The Silverthorne Rec Center is currently under construction and while the main areas are accessible there is definitely a bit of construction disruption to deal with.
A day pass (around $16-$20 for an adult, and less for kids/seniors) gets you access to ALL of this for the entire day. You can easily spend 3-4 hours here, which, per-hour, is the cheapest fun you can have in this county.
Get Your Arts & Crafts On
If you’re feeling creative (or just want a really unique souvenir), our local art centers are incredible. This is the perfect way to spend a couple of hours and leave with something you actually made.
- Ready Paint Fire! (Breckenridge): This is the classic, drop-in-anytime “paint-your-own-pottery” studio, and it’s a blast. You pick a ceramic piece (like a mug or a bear), paint it, and they fire it for you. They also have canvas painting and mosaic-making. It’s great for all ages, and the studio fee is super reasonable.
- Art Spot (Silverthorne): This is a “makerspace,” which is a fancy word for a public art studio where you can just… make stuff. For a super-low daily admission (around $12 for an adult, $5 for a kid), you get access to makerspaces for painting, textiles, kids’ crafts, and more.
- BreckCreate (Breckenridge): This is the heart of Breck’s art scene. The best free part is just strolling the Arts District campus (a collection of cute historic studios) and popping into the Old Masonic Hall to see the free gallery. For an affordable upgrade, check their calendar and sign up for a 2-hour “try-it” workshop in pottery, glassblowing, or painting.
Go to a Matinee or a Show (The Smart Way)
Sometimes you just want to sit in a dark room with popcorn. I get it. We have fantastic options for every taste.
- The Eclipse Theater: This is your spot for first-run, blockbuster movies and local film festivals. They have the must-have snacks and they do serve canned alcoholic beverages.
- The Local’s Hack: Go for a matinee showing (any show before 6 PM) for only $7.00. Or, even better, go on their Discount Tuesday for a $6.00 ticket all day. That’s literally less than a beer.
- Breckenridge Backstage Theatre: If you’re in the mood for live theater, this is an absolute gem. It’s an award-winning professional theater in a super intimate setting. It’s not “movie cheap,” but for a special, high-culture night out, it’s an incredible (and warm) experience.
- Theatre SilCo: This is our other professional, local live-playhouse, located in a beautiful, modern building. Check both schedules; between the two, you’re bound to find an amazing play or musical happening.
The “Great Indoors” aren’t just a backup plan; they are part of the real Breckenridge experience. Sipping cocoa by a fire, exploring a local museum, or letting the kids swim off their energy is just as important as the vertical feet you ski.
